Federal Nutrition Assistance Programs 101 Guide

There are many Nutrition Assistance Programs. Keeping track of the different programs can be difficult. We created this guide to explain government nutrition programs that can benefit you and your family.

A good first place to start is the FNS Contacts webpage. Use the search filters on the left to find specific programs, tribal, state/territory, or regional contacts.

Nutrition Benefits General Overview:

If you are eligible for SNAP, you may also be eligible for other nutrition benefits which can be used at farmers markets such as Double Up Food Bucks, Senior & WIC FMNP as well as SUN Bucks. Use the websites below to find details about your state’s participation in this program.

Pro Tip: If you qualify for SNAP you may also be eligible for cash, child care assistance, museum passes and other programs, so ask about other programs while speaking to local social service agencies and nonprofits.

Farmers Market Nutrition Programs (FMNP)

  • WIC FMNP: WIC Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) provides coupons to families actively participating in the WIC program. Customers can use the coupons to buy fresh produce at approved farmers markets. To see if your state participates and, if so, find your local WIC FMNP contact use this FNS Map.
  • Senior FMNP: The Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) offers coupons to seniors ages 60+ who meet income guidelines. To see if your state participates and, if so, find your local SFMNP program contact use this FNS Map.
  • SUN Bucks (Summer EBT): SUN Bucks, also known as Summer EBT, is a program to help families buy food for their school-aged children. Almost all states participate, but not all. Use this website to learn more about if and what programs are available in your state. In states that participate in SUNBucks, families will get a one-time benefit of $120 per year for each eligible child to help buy groceries during the summer months. SUN Bucks benefits will be available by the end of July. People who receive SUN Bucks have 122 days to use their benefits.
    • Children who get SUN Bucks can still participate in other summer meal programs. To see what other Summer Meal programs are available near you visit the Summer Meals Site Finder 2025

Other Federally Funded Programs

  • Double Up Bucks: Double Up helps you bring home more healthy food by matching your SNAP, or food stamps, dollars spent on fresh fruits and veggies. If you receive SNAP benefits, you’re automatically eligible for Double Up Food Bucks. It’s easy as pie.
